You are great. You are amazing! We don’t hear things like that very often, do we? Our community group met tonight, and we were in charge of providing the goodies as well as the lesson. I had seen the video below some time ago and thought it would spark some interesting conversation. It certainly did, but first, an icebreaker.
After enjoying the treats Rene and I made, as well as birthday cake (a 40th and a 50th coming up this month!), but before watching the video, I asked everyone to get in groups of about 3. Spouses could not be together; interestingly, that led to 2 men’s groups and 2 women’s groups… I instructed the participants to share 3 things that they “love” about themselves. Only one could be a physical trait, and the rest had to be character-related. This was actually harder than most thought it would be! Thanks to Heather Flies for this activity – she used it with 2,000 middle schoolers at Jr. High Believe a few weeks ago.
Then we watched the video, and I would encourage you to take some time to do the same right now. It is 16 minutes long, so pull up a chair.
It’s past my bedtime, so I will mainly say that I’d love to hear your feedback. But we had a very thoughtful conversation afterward. A few things stood out.
- Even when it’s not made and/or promoted by a church or Christian organization, there is much in the broader culture that is instructive in matters of truth and beauty.
- Because everyone is made in the image of God and benefits from “common grace,” everyone we meet is worthy of respect and dignity.
- Whether it’s our spouse, kids, coworkers, or strangers we meet – in particular the service personnel we tend to ignore – we all respond positively when people fill our emotional gas tank.
Who can you validate today?
